FAQs
About the Ensemble
- How large is the choir?
- We aim for a balanced chamber sound with approximately 8 singers per voice part (SATB), resulting in an ensemble of roughly 32 singers.
- What is the artistic style or "signature sound" of the group?
- We are a classical ensemble. We look for voices that can blend seamlessly into a unified cathedral-style sound, rather than soloistic or pop-style vocal production.
- What type of music does the choir sing?
- We perform a cappella and accompanied works spanning from the Renaissance to modern compositions. Our repertoire is thoughtfully curated for each concert cycle, and prospective singers can view the current season's music list on the “Rehearsal Plan”, linked under the "Join Us" page of our website.
- What is a typical rehearsal like?
- Each rehearsal is designed to be both productive and musically fulfilling. We begin with a 30-minute group vocal coaching session focused on healthy technique and blending our sound. The remainder of the time is spent rehearsing our repertoire, occasionally breaking into sectionals to master more intricate passages in a collaborative setting. While we tackle complex repertoire, the atmosphere is supportive, friendly, and fun.
- What is your performance schedule for the year?
- Refer here for our upcoming performances.
Auditions & Membership
- When are auditions held? Can I join mid-season?
- We typically hold recruitment periods at the start of our cycles (Note: 1 season contains 3 cycles -- fall, winter and spring), but auditions are open year-round! Please fill out our interest form. You may be invited to audition immediately or asked to join us for the start of the next term.
- How comfortable should I be with reading music?
- You should be able to sight-read a simple melody. For complex parts, you are expected to learn the music outside of rehearsal.
- What are the costs associated with joining?
- There are membership dues to help cover the costs of music and venue operations. Dues are currently $100 per cycle (Note: 1 season contains 3 cycles). We do not require the purchase of a specific concert uniform; we utilize a standard concert dress code (all black) that most singers already own.
Rehearsals and Commitment
- When and where do you rehearse?
- Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings in Palo Alto.
- What is the attendance and punctuality policy?
- To maintain our high standard of performance, attendance is crucial. We generally allow a maximum of two absences per concert cycle. We also prioritize punctuality to respect everyone's time.
- What is the typical tenure of a singer?
- We have a very dedicated membership! Our core group has been singing with the choir since its inception, and most singers stay for multiple seasons, building strong musical relationships within the ensemble.
